In 1988 Holiday Corporation was bought by the British Bass PLC, which followed the rest of the domestic Holiday Inn hotels in 1990, when founder Wilson sold his shares in the hotel group known worldwide as holiday Inn. In 1991, the Crowne Plaza division was separated from the Holiday Inns, which originally called themselves Crowned Plaza, to create a distinctive brand. The rest of Holiday Corporation, including the Bowery Green Kentucky Sheraton Hotel and Suites Hotel in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was spun off by shareholders as Promus Companies, registered as a separate company under the Securities and Exchange Commission. Although not part of the Holidayinn system, these hotels are referred to in their directory as "Holiday Inn Corporation Directories."

In 1957, Wilson began marketing the chain as Holiday Inn of America, and ordered that all its properties be standardized. In 1965, it introduced a centralised reservation system, which allowed visitors to the Holiday Inn to receive reservations for other Holiday Inn locations via a teleprinter. Wilson also developed a chain called Wilson's World Hotels, with hotels in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and New Jersey. The hotel also owned the domain "holidayinn.com" (# 22), which forced much larger companies to use it.
After Wilson's departure, the board of the Holiday Inn removed the large sign, and a 1973 injunction meant that the Myrtle Beach Hotel was granted the right to use the name in its own name. The procedure for simultaneous use was resumed between the hotel and its parent company IHG, which continued to operate the holiday home, although it had to use a distinctly different script. In 2006, a settlement was reached between IhG and the United States District Court for the Southern District of South Carolina, which allowed the hotel Holidayinn.com to be included in the I hG system.
